Dental Anxiety Is More Common Than You Think — Here’s What Can Help

For many people, visiting the dentist isn’t just inconvenient - it can cause real anxiety. In fact, dental anxiety affects millions of patients and is one of the most common reasons people delay or avoid dental care.

If you’ve ever postponed an appointment because of nervousness, embarrassment, or fear of discomfort, you’re not alone. The good news is that modern dentistry offers several ways to make dental visits more comfortable than ever before.

One option that many patients don’t realize exists is IV sedation dentistry.

Why Dental Anxiety Happens

Dental anxiety can come from many different experiences or concerns. Some patients may have had a negative dental visit in the past, while others worry about discomfort, gag reflex issues, or feeling out of control during treatment.

Common causes of dental anxiety include:

  • Previous dental experiences that were uncomfortable
  • Fear of pain or needles
  • Sensitive gag reflex
  • Difficulty getting numb
  • Embarrassment about oral health

Unfortunately, avoiding dental visits can lead to more serious problems over time, including tooth decay, gum disease, infection, and tooth loss.

How Sedation Dentistry Helps

Sedation dentistry has helped many patients feel more comfortable receiving dental care. One of the most effective options available is IV sedation, which helps patients enter a deeply relaxed state during treatment.

With IV sedation, medication is delivered through a small IV in the arm or hand. Patients remain responsive but feel very relaxed, and many remember little about the procedure afterward.

At Patrick B. Toms, DMD, IV sedation is offered to help patients who experience dental anxiety receive the care they need in a calm, supportive environment.

Signs Sedation Dentistry Might Be Helpful

Sedation dentistry may be a good option if you:

  • Feel anxious or fearful about dental appointments
  • Have a strong gag reflex
  • Need longer or more complex dental procedures
  • Have difficulty sitting comfortably for extended visits
  • Have postponed dental care because of anxiety

For many patients, sedation dentistry makes it possible to return to regular dental visits after years of avoidance.

If dental anxiety has kept you from scheduling an appointment, our team at Patrick B. Toms, DMD is here to help.
