Are Veneers Right for You?
Veneers are designed to address a number of imperfections—and are often the secret behind the flawless smiles you see on TV or in your favorite movies. These thin shells that fit over the front of your teeth are made of dental-grade veneers porcelain, a durable and reliable material used in other restorations as well, such as fillings and porcelain crowns. Porcelain teeth restorations have a natural translucence that gives it a highly lifelike appearance, meaning only you and your dentist will know the secret behind your flawless smile! Even better, the porcelain veneers cost is manageable with financing options from our office.
Veneers are also easy to care for. Simply brush and floss your teeth using a soft-bristled brush and fluoridated toothpaste. You can extend the life of your veneers by taking extra care when you bite into certain hard or sticky foods, such as a caramel apple. If you clench or grind your teeth, we recommend that you wear a nightguard when you sleep to protect your investment.
With proper care and regular visits to our office for cleanings and check-ups, veneers can last 15 years or longer!
What Cosmetic Issues Can Veneers Solve?
Veneers are an excellent choice to address issues that affect the appearance of your teeth but do not affect their health. When issues go deeper and impact your dental health, we’ll want to look at restorative treatments to ensure your long-term dental health before we look at cosmetic treatment options like veneers.
Because veneers are designed to be placed on healthy teeth, we’ll provide a full assessment and let you know of any problems that might need to be addressed first, like decay (cavities) or gum disease. Once these are under control, we can follow up with veneers to address your cosmetic concerns.
Veneers can be placed individually or as part of a larger cosmetic or restorative treatment plan. For instance, many of our patients who are former tobacco users like to restore their smiles as a reward for quitting, and veneers may be a part of that makeover.
Other instances in which veneers are a good choice include:
- Chips and cracks - You bite down into a slice of pizza and—ow!—hit an olive pit. Now what? While minor chips and cracks don’t affect the health of your teeth, a chip can cause a discolored area or a change to the shape of your tooth. Veneers are a perfect solution for concealing a crack and restoring your smile.
- Discoloration - Teeth can become discolored for a variety of reasons. Common culprits are dark or staining foods and beverages that are consumed frequently, like coffee, tea, or red wine. Certain medications can also cause stains as can a history of tobacco use. When stains are stubborn and don’t respond to whitening treatments, veneers can be the right answer for giving you back your pearly whites.
- Unusual tooth shape or size - Is one of your teeth slightly smaller than the others? Does a tooth have an unusual shape that stands out when you smile? It happens sometimes. A veneer is an excellent solution for giving your teeth a more uniform appearance.
- Slight misalignments - Often, misaligned teeth require a more comprehensive solution, like braces or Invisalign®, but minor misalignments that don’t impact your dental health can be corrected with a strategically placed veneer. A veneer can also help reduce the appearance of minor gaps.
What Is the Porcelain Veneers Procedure?
Placing veneers is fairly simple. We take images and impressions of your teeth, which will be sent with specific instructions to our lab. We’ll also prep your teeth for the veneers. Most types of veneers require a thin layer of enamel removal, which creates a space for the veneers to sit on top of the teeth without disrupting your smile’s alignment by “sticking out.”
Certain types of veneers, like the popular brand Lumineers®, don’t require any enamel removal or very minimal removal due to their ultra-thin structure. If you’re interested in Lumineers, just let us know. We’re happy to discuss this option with you!
Once your veneers are back from the lab, we’ll bond them in place and you’ll be ready to flash your beautiful new smile at everyone you meet!
