Sedation Dentistry
Sedation allows dentists to perform important dental and oral procedures safely and comfortably for the patient. The most common way this happens is with nitrous oxide. You may have heard others refer to nitrous oxide as "laughing gas." Nitrous oxide inhalation sedation is so common in dentistry that researchers call it the backbone of anxiety alleviation in dentistry. It has anxiolysis (anxiety-reducing) and analgesia (pain-relieving) effects.
Nitrous oxide is a colorless, odorless gas that medical professionals have used for more than 150 years. If you're having a procedure done using nitrous oxide, your dentist will administer it using a mask or nasal cannula. Unlike other forms of pain relief, nitrous oxide allows the patient to be fully awake and alert. You will be able to speak and hear while your dentist is administering treatment. However, some people do get relaxed enough to gently "doze off" with laughing gas. If you have a dental procedure coming up, we want to make sure you feel fully comfortable with nitrous oxide.
