Dental cavities are a common problem that develops when bacteria erode your enamel. Previously, cavities were treated with an amalgam material, a mixture of different metals such as mercury or silver. We now know that these fillings do not bond well with the enamel and the mercury is hazardous to your health. At Patrick B. Toms, D.M.D. in Gainesville, GA, general dentist Dr. Patrick B. Toms uses tooth-colored fillings made with composite resin to fill cavities and protect the tooth. Dr. Toms can also take out metal fillings and apply composite resin fillings for a more reliable and more attractive treatment of cavities. Schedule your consultation today.

Office is beautifully decorated and well organized. Myself and a large part of my family have been regular patients for years. "I recently moved to GA and had not established care with a dentist yet. While I was eating, a crown from a previous root canal came off. So, I needed to find a dentist ASAP! I have pretty significant dental-related anxiety and previously sought out a dentist certified in sedation dentistry for this reason. I found several several recommendations for Dr. Toms online and was pleasantly surprised and relieved to learn that he is certified and proficient in both oral and IV sedation. I called his office to schedule an appointment and did not expect a next-day appointment! The staff was so friendly on the phone, and even more welcoming in person! They made me feel like a long time regular patient from the first moment I met them! I filled out all of my paperwork online before my appointment and just had to sign them once I arrived., The check-in process was smooth and quick, and I waited less than 10 minutes to see Dr.,Toms., They even scheduled my cleaning 2 days later! Highly recommend!"- J.M. / Google / May 23, 2021
Composite resin tooth-colored fillings often fill in the decay in the enamel once it has been cleaned by Dr. Toms. Composite resin is a useful material that may be used to treat other problems with your teeth, such as chips or enamel that has been worn down by bruxism (teeth grinding). Since the material is made to blend with your teeth, tooth-colored fillings may be placed on the back and front teeth for a great appearance. If you have amalgam fillings, talk to Dr. Toms about getting them taken out and refilled with composite resin.
What To Expect
Receiving a filling at Patrick B. Toms, D.M.D. is an easy process. The treatment area will be numbed to help you feel more comfortable. Stronger sedation methods may be considered for any fears or dental anxieties to keep you relaxed. Once you're ready, the decayed enamel can be removed using a unique dental drill that Dr. Toms will choose based upon the location of the cavity and the amount of decay. Once the enamel is removed and the area is disinfected, space will be replaced with the composite material and set with a special light. Dr. Toms will smooth the filling so it matches your other teeth.
You will be able to resume your day once your tooth-colored filling is complete, but you may notice a sensitivity to cold and hot food and beverages for a few days. You can use nonprescription pain relief medication to address any discomfort; however, you shouldn't experience any serious problems. If your filling seems too high or uneven, please call us. Your filling should be cleaned by following a regular home care routine including daily flossing and brushing. During your annual dental exam, Dr. Toms will check your filling to determine if it should be replaced or repaired.
Composite resin fillings are a standard treatment for dental cavities that are ordinarily covered, at least in part, by insurance. A team member will talk to your dental insurance company to understand your coverage so we can calculate your personal cost. If you do not have dental insurance, Dr. Toms will go over the payment methods we accept at your appointment, plus information on medical financing.
