Overview

Even though general dentist Dr. Patrick B. Toms makes every attempt to save and maintain your natural teeth, there are instances when a tooth or teeth might have to be removed. A simple extraction takes out a tooth that's visible over the gums because of major decay or trauma to the tooth that cannot be repaired. If you have teeth that are still under your gums and need to come out, then Dr. Toms can perform a surgical extraction to alleviate the impaction. We see patients of all ages at Patrick B. Toms, D.M.D. for extractions. Our experienced staff will provide patient-first care with compassion. Our Gainesville, GA office has intravenous and oral-conscious sedation methods available throughout your treatment. Get in touch with our North Georgia office for more information or to schedule a tooth extraction consultation with Dr. Toms.

Best Candidates

If your tooth was damaged or broken from decay, Dr. Toms can make every attempt to save it using a crown, dental bonding, or a filling. However, a tooth might be too decayed and will have to be removed. We do this to conserve the health of the rest of your teeth. You may also require a dental extraction to remove a tooth or teeth because of overcrowding. This generally involves your third molars, popularly called wisdom teeth, which grow in around age 17 – 21. Older kids with baby teeth that haven't naturally fallen out may also need to have an extraction so the adult teeth can erupt correctly. If you are a candidate for braces or contemplating Invisalign, then you might require a tooth extraction. This can make space for the remaining teeth to erupt more naturally — not forced and crowded.

What To Expect

Dental extractions are performed in our office using local anesthesia on the area near the tooth being removed. Different forms of sedation may be used based on the degree of the extraction and also to help you stay relaxed in case you have some dental worries. Once you are prepared, Dr. Toms will start the procedure.

Traditional extraction
During a traditional extraction, Dr. Toms will numb the tooth with a local anesthetic and give you the sedation method you selected. He will use forceps and elevators to loosen and remove the tooth.

Surgical extraction
A surgical extraction entails making incisions into your gums to get to the tooth. If necessary, the tooth may be broken up into smaller pieces for easier removal. When the tooth is out, Dr. Toms will close the incision in your gums.

Dr. Toms may write a prescription for antibiotics to be taken prior to and following an extraction.

Recovery

Based upon the anesthesia and sedation used throughout your extraction, you might be required to have a responsible adult take you home. As your gums heal, you need to avoid smoking, using straws, and spitting to avoid developing a painful dry socket. We will go over instructions with you about dry sockets at your consultation appointment.

Your recovery will vary depending on the complexity of your extraction; however, many patients prefer to eat soft, room-temperature food for at least a couple of days. Dr. Toms will speak with you regarding what is normal as you recover and how to care for your gums. Your gums will probably be inflamed afterward, therefore Dr. Toms suggests over-the-counter pain medicine and cold compresses next to your cheek for comfort. Sometimes, Dr. Toms does give written prescriptions for pain medicine and/or antibiotics in severe cases. If you are to have a follow-up visit, you will schedule it with our front office. Throughout the year, keep your regular appointments at Patrick B. Toms, D.M.D. for dental exams and cleanings so Dr. Toms can track your oral health following the extraction.

Insurance Coverage

Extraction is generally covered by dental insurance, but your sedation option may not be included. Prior to your extraction, we'll call your insurance company to determine your particular coverage and estimate your expenses. If you do not have dental insurance, then we can speak with you about the numerous payments and low-interest dental financing through CareCredit®.
